JD Barnes' lifetime of devotion to photography has spanned the medium from photo journalism, advertising and documentary to nature, travel and fine landscape capture.
A Vermont native, Joy received a degree in photography from Bennington College with
subsequent masters classes at both Maine Photography Workshop and Brooks Institute of
Photography in Santa Barbara, California.
With an initial interest in black and white film photography, she embarked on documenting
the now extinct furniture mills of New England while working as a photo journalist in the
early 1970's.
Moving to San Francisco in 1979, Joy explored a photo career in advertising. For nearly 10
years she worked in the studio and darkroom with large format cameras and film. In addition
to perfecting her technical skills as a photographer, it was during this time that she
mastered the craft of exceptional printing which can still be seen in her prints today.
Emerging from years in the studio and darkroom, Joy shifted her focus to travel, nature and
adventure in the digital world. She shoots with Nikon digital equipment and prints all of
her own art prints with an Epson 7800 Stylus Pro. The ultrachrome inks and archival papers
present her imagery with spectacular color and enduring quality that will grace any fine
art collection today.
JD Barnes' work, described as "emotionally charged", "expressively sensual", "bold in both
color and design" and often "funny", has been exhibited internationally in public, corporate
and private arenas.
Currently, Joy's photos are on display at several California coastal
galleries. Her new book, "Sensual Sands, A Woman's Passionate Journey," is on sale now. Up-to-date information can be obtained through the studio.
Happily residing in Southern California, she is already planning for her next adventure.
